Top 5 Unexpected Dietary Habits

The following is a guest-post submitted by Jason from Rainbow Hearth.

diet-coke-soda1I’m the manager of a Texas Hill Country Bed and Breakfast that caters to vegetarians, among other visitors.

One of the most interesting things about my time here has been observing people and their dietary habits. Of course, not everyone who comes here is vegetarian and not all vegetarians eat healthy. But most people interested in nutrition find this topic fascinating, so I thought I would contribute here, to Groovy Vegetarian, the top five unexpected dietary habits I have observed while working in a food service capacity.

  1. Lachanophobia: Or fear of vegetables.  Some people are so afraid of vegetables that the mere mention of anything grown outside, like a carrot or tomato, gives them the shivers and causes their faces to crinkle in utter disgust.  I once had a man need to be fed by his wife with an airplane-like motion because the omelet he was eating contained fresh, garden-grown rosemary!
  2. Super High Protein for Older Women: Some people who have had gastric bypass surgery or those on Atkins type diets must have higher amounts of protein, but these types of special restrictions are not what I am referring to.  There is a segment of 50 to 60 year-old women who demand huge amounts of animal protein for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  It does not matter what is served as long as the animal protein is there. The reasons they give tend to be either they are trying to maintain their strength or simply that they have always eaten that way.
  3. Anti-“Healthy” People: Words like “healthy”, “organic”, and “nutritious” can be enough to make some people refuse to even taste the food.  For example, we serve Innocent Chocolate, which is some of the best tasting chocolate most people have ever tasted and it’s sugar-free and dairy-free.  I learned early on that many people would refuse to eat the chocolate if I told them it did not contain sugar or dairy before they ate it.  We once had a woman who had just complimented us on how good the food was, stop mid-chew and refuse to finish her meal.  Why?  We told her the vegetables were organic!
  4. Vegetarians Who Won’t Eat Vegetables: Typically, the reason they call themselves vegetarian is because they don’t eat meat.  They still eat primarily processed foods like nachos, French fries and Twinkies.  Vegetables, however, turn them off just as much as meat.
  5. Diet Soda Addiction: This is a huge problem.  There are a number of people who are addicted to diet soda and many of these people are vegetarians.  Almost every weekend we have people bring 12 or 24 packs of soda (usually diet) with them and they drink all of them during two-day stays. I’ve even seen vegetarians chug a diet soda, like it was water, everyday after a run.

The saddest part about most of these people is that they are usually somewhat overweight and when I speak with them, they complain about everything from diabetes and high cholesterol to cancer, but don’t make the connection between their health and their poor diet choices.

Editor Note: Thanxs for the interesting article, Jason.

  1. Great post Jason! I love #5. This is why I hate nutrition facts. People see 0 calories and think they can drink as much as they want. Or more generally, they have a carb/protein/fat ratio and calorie total they want to hit, and they think that as long as they hit it, it doesn’t matter what they eat to do so! The ingredients that you’re putting into your body are so much more important than any mathematical relationships among them.

    Thanks Matt. Your absolutely right about the ingredients. With the diet soda thing I have found that if they acknowledge they are addicted to it then they usually understand it is bad but just accept it at as a vice that they will hopefully break one day. If they don’t acknowledge it is an addiction then I don’t dare ask more questions because they get defensive very quickly. Coke tells them its ok for them to drink diet soda and thats that.

    Awesome article. I’ve seen all types except #2. Strange!
    #4 is funny. Those are the people that say “But, I’m a vegetarian, why am I gaining/not losing weight.” They just don’t get it.

    That’s so cool you have a Vegetarian minded B&B. I’m going to have to start keeping a look out for those types of B&B’s!!

    Nice article, Jason, thanks!
    The first group makes me smile every time. I can’t get my dad to eat anything other than iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes and cucumbers. Broccoli? Forget it, and don’t even ask about spinach. Granted, most vegetables outside of carrots, broccoli, potatoes, and asparagus were pretty foreign to me before I became veg. I can’t tell you how many foods I discovered later in life because I just TRIED IT! Lentils, butternut squash, Swiss chard, mushrooms, curry, garbanzo beans, tofu, tempeh… With so many good (and healthy!) foods out there, it’s a shame to turn up the nose at any of them without at least trying them first!

  5. Callie says:

    That is seriously crazy, but quite relevant to some folks that I know. Once you mention healthy they freak OUT on me and won’t go near something green or fresh. Haha.

  6. Jason says:

    @Callie,
    Healthy is definitely a word to avoid. I have tried using “nutritious”, “wholesome”, and “beneficial” but all to no avail. Finally, I just say “Try this, it’s delicious.” I still get the extreme hesitation but I have had the most luck with it. Otherwise, I have simply stopped trying as I learned how these people are extreme energy drains.

    @Lisa,
    I know exactly the family dietary habits you are referring too. My wife and I recently went to visit her parents and they wanted to take us to get a “healthy” lunch. So they took us to Arby’s to get a salad! Her dad put more ranch dressing on that iceberg lettuce than I have ever seen.

    @Stacey,
    Thanks for the encouragement.

  7. David Orman says:

    There is a portion of the population that the mention of words like “health” do in fact, perk up their ears. As the problems continue to mount with the health care/disease management system, people are recognizing that the ONLY dependable health care is SELF health care.

    Information such as what is on this site goes a long way in encouraging this much needed trend.

    Thanks Matt.

  8. I have a friend who won’t drink water! She only drinks diet soda, she says water is ‘boring’… Hard to believe.
