Are you considering going vegetarian? Or maybe going part-time with the diet, such as adopting Meatless Mondays?

vegetarian starter kit

Not sure how to get started, or what recipes to use. One great guide for new vegetarians is the vegetarian starter kit. I requested one back in February 2007, when i was wanting more information on the plant-based diet. It comes in the mail in a few weeks, and is loaded with tips on how to start.

The free kit includes healthy recipes and low fat recipes all made using no meat. Vegetarians are some of the most savvy food people in the world, as they need to truly study ingredients and be crafty with their vegetarian meals. You too will soon become a savvy food planner and eater.

The kit contains nutrition information, resource links, a few pages dedicated to animal cruelty issues, and loads more. It isn’t meant to convert anyone, is sent by request only, and is completely free.

To request your free vegetarian starter kit from Go Veg, fill out their simple form.

***I have to give a shout out to Patricia from Project Organic Eating, for reminding me of this great vegetarian freebie!

Hi, thanxs for stopping by, have not seen you here before. Welcome, welcome.

As for going vegetarian, you can always request the vegetarian starter kit, and see how it motivates you, or interests you. Going vegetarian is a very personal decision, it has to be made by you, and only you.

Let me know if you have any questions. Missy.

  3. I have been a vegetarian for a while and this will be perfect I am always looking for simple meals that are meat free. This will be perfect plus its not too expensive. Thanks for the recommendation.

  4. I’m all for vegetarian info, and getting people started – but that fact that it has “Peta” on the cover scares me big time!  Those people are just……well, kooks!

Thanks for posting this link!  I’ve always wanted to try eating vegetarian – at least for a while, but have always been unsure of how to make protein rich, tasty dishes that were satisfying.  Hopefully, this guide will help.

You’re welcome! By the way, protein is over-rated. Concentrate on a balanced meal, and you should be alright. Thanxs for the comment, and the visit.

I hear you. I know PETA can be in your face, but they speak for the voiceless and the innocent. They scare me, too. They really bring out the ugly, and we don’t like it, or want to see it. But who else is going to do it? Who else is going to expose the ugliness of factory farms, and abuse, and animal neglect and suffering.

I could never do what they do. But i’m glad they have the torch, and march on. It has to be done.

Hi. Glad you appreciate the link and info. Hope it helps you in your veggie journey.

  9. @Missy – oh not, that wasn’t what I meant at all.  I didn’t mean the “in your face” part so much as the fact that they are proven blatant liars.  Especially their president Ingrid Newkirk.

She doesn’t even believe any person in the world should be able to own a cat or dog:
“The bottom line is that people don’t have the right to manipulate or to
breed dogs and cats … If people want toys, they should buy inanimate
objects. If they want companionship, they should seek it with their own
    kind…….. …. “I don’t use the word ‘pet.’ I think it’s speciest
    language.
I prefer ‘companion animal.’ We would no longer allow… pet shops…
Eventually companion animals would be phased out.”
    – Ingrid Newkirk, national director,
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA),
    Harper’s Magazine, Aug. 1988

She did NOT say people shouldn’t own a dog or cat. She said and i quote, “people should not MANIPULATE or BREED dogs and cats”.

That is quite different than saying people should not have a dog or cat. Plus that article was from 1988. But i would contend, that PETA president Ingrid Newkirk has seen more ugliness in her tenure as an animal rights activist, than most people see in a lifetime.

You can’t really trump PETA with me. Yes they can be kooky, and yes sometimes their methods are quite controversial, but i still support their hard work.

They are quite strong-willed (maybe even militant) when it comes to animal rights, because they KNOW that no matter how hard they try, how much money they spend, how many controversies they create. Animal suffering will continue.

For this reason, i support them and applaud them.

I didn’t know this was John (from JtPratt.com) I have to add that i quite like that blog. Glad you came by. Thanxs!

  12. @Missy – yep it’s me, you caught me…I own waaaay too many blogs.  I respect your position on Peta, my daughter was into them for a way long time – until she found out all the crazy stuff about Newkirk.  I always tell everyone to read, read, read and eventually the truth floats to the surface.

that thing about owning dogs and cats as pets though is really true…it’s not just that one quote…

“It’s not about loving animals. It’s about fighting injustice. My whole goal is for humans to have as little contact as possible with animals.”
Gary Yourofsky, founder of Animals Deserve Adequate Protection
Today and Tomorrow (ADAPTT), now employed as PeTA’s national lecturer

“One day we would like an end to pet shops and the breeding of animals.
(Dogs) would pursue their natural lives in the wild…They would have
full lives, not waiting at home for someone to come home in the evening
and pet them and then sit there and watch TV.”
    Ingrid Newkirk
    Founder, PETA
“Where Would We Be Without Animals?, Chicago Daily Herald, March 1, 1990

“In a perfect world, all other than human animals would be free of
human interference, dogs and cats would part of the ecological scheme.”
    PeTA’s Statement on Companion Animals

It is time we demand an end to the misguided and abusive concept
of animal ownership. The first step on this long, but just, road would be
ending the concept of pet ownership”
Elliot Katz, President “In Defense of Animals,” Spring 1997

“As John Bryant has written in his book Fettered Kingdoms,
they [pets] are like slaves, even if well-kept slaves.”
    PETA’s Statement on Companion Animals.

“The cat, like the dog, must disappear… We should cut the domestic cat
free from our dominance by neutering, neutering, and more neutering, until
our pathetic version of the cat ceases to exist.”
    — John Bryant, Fettered Kingdoms: An Examination of A Changing Ethic
(Washington, DC: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
    (PETA), 1982), p. 15

oh, and here’s the best one…

“I am opposed to having children. Having a purebred human baby
is like having a purebred dog; it’s nothing but vanity, human vanity.”
    Ingrid Newkirk – Founder, PETA

I guess i’m kooky, too. As i subscribe to alot of their beliefs. But it isn’t as simple as quoting people, because to take a quote and make a value judgement on that alone is pretty simplistic.

I feel what they feel, and i’m nowhere near as entrenched as they are. They as in those you quoted.

I can easily go to any of your blogs, pull out a quote, and make all sorts of judgements and or assumptions based on that alone. But i think you would agree with me, that it isn’t THE WHOLE PICTURE. There is so much passion in animal rights. It really is a pretty hard core subject, and one with many different viewpoints.

I would never discount the work of PETA, or other animal activists. As they deal with the stuff, that we can’t fathom. I think that some do go to extremes, but i’m still not going to discount these people either, because i still value their input and passion.

Who is to say, what is enough? Who is to decide what is allowed and what is not allowed, in the name of animal safety and care? Not me. I’m not in the trenches, like they are. I don’t see what they see day in and day out.

Most animal rights activists are very burned out. They need our support, not our judgements.

  14. Thanks for sharing!

There was an awesome vegetarian restaurant where I used to live that I absolutely loved.  I always said I would go vegetarian if I knew  how to make the recipes

  16. Thanks for posting this… I wasn’t aware that this was free.  I’ll have to check into this.  I do try to eat vegetarian when I can, but unfortunately my canine teeth get the best of me in foods that I crave.  Maybe that will change with time (or when my teeth fall out… :)
