In the Food Industry section of Bnet.com, columnist Dan Mitchell, poses the irreverent question: Only Good Eaters Die Young?
He goes on to mention, that this year alone, the following high profile health evangelists passed away:
Robert Atkins, 71, Founder of The Atkins Diet
Jim Fixx, 52, Running Enthusiast
Euell Gibbons, 64, Wild Foods Promoter and Post Grape Nuts Cereal Spokesman
Jerome Rodale, 72, ran the health magazine empire, Rodale.com
Jerome Rodale, who magazine empire covers all kinds of health-related subjects from organic food to running, slipped away at age 72 on the set of the Dick Cavett Show, during a taping. He had just finished talking about how healthy he was — he even said “I’ve decided to live to be a hundred” and “I never felt better in my life!” — and was sitting next to columnist Pete Hamill when he passed. Ironically, Hamill, the onetime hard-drinking, Camel-puffing, two fisted veteran of New York’s tabloid wars, is still with us.
This was brought to light by the editors at Gawker.com, who kind of made a case for themselves, on how many fast food chain founders, lived to an average ripe age of 95. See notables below:
Wilber Hardee, 89, founder of Hardee’s
JR Simplot, 99, inventor of the processed french fry
Irvine Robbins, 90, founder of Baskin-Robbins
Lovie Yacey, 96, founder of FatBurger
Carl Karcher, 90, founder of Carl’s Jr
Fact is, i’m 100% sure you (my lovely readers) can point out a handful (if not more) of healthy food eaters, who have lived way past 80.
So i challenge you to name them below. Get ready, get set, go!

Well…. Jim Fixx used to be an avid smoker who smoked 2 packs a day, and over weight. Its no wonder he died early.

Actually, the health nuts didn’t die this year, though the fast-food moguls have all died recently. And anyway, the conclusion of the Bnet item was that, on average, eating healthy is better than not.
Leslie:
Thanxs! for pitching in.
BloggerNoob:
Not sure. Will have to look into it.
Joey:
Didn’t know that about Fixx. I suppose eating a vegetarian diet, but smoking 2 packs a day, isn’t going to be on your side. Thanxs for the info.
Happy Herbivore:
Sounds good, will check out the book. Thx!
Dan:
I didn’t get that conclusion, after reading your article. But i know i know, you’re just the messenger. I’m sure i could write an article on the other side of the coin, “Fast Food Junkies Who Have Dropped Dead, All Under The Age of 40. Hmmn, that sounds like a great idea.
Dan, thanxs for visiting. Appreciate your comment, too.
Yeah, that’s my excuse for unhealthy eating i dont want to die!
My grandma had a cholesterol level over 300 for dozens of years and she lived to be over 90. No one in my family is very conscious of our food intake and knock on wood we are all a healthy weight and live long. Not sure how food intake plays into the whole live long thing.

Hi, WS:
I see your avatar alot on the blog, nice that you decided to leave a comment. Thx!
My grandparents, both on my mom and my dads side, all lived to well past 80, and they did not lead the healthiest of lives. But they did work hard, and exercise did play a part in their longevity.
Fact is (as Dan stated above) several factors can and do contribute to ones long life, or lack thereof. It isn’t diet alone.
Thanxs for the great comments, good discussion going on here.
Happy 4th of July! (to all of you)
Missy.
I think the issue isn’t so much whether it’s better to eat healthy or not…eating healthy is a really good thing. The issue is more that the human body is still so much of a mystery that we don’t know what “healthy” really means. I recently read an article in Fitness magazine about a nutritionist who was on a low-sodium, low-fat, low-calorie diet but was having dizzy spells. Her doctor told her she wasn’t eating enough sodium! Since diet isn’t quite an exact science yet, I think the best diet is the one with variety and moderation.
