Kathy »
Wow, where do i begin. LoL. WARNING - major sarcasm up ahead. I'm glad that for you (and your family) "the most wonderful thing in the world is to see your spouse and kids drag a dead deer in your home". That's a lovely sentiment, and should be turned into a Hallmark card. - end of sarcasm -

Well i've never done it, don't plan on doing it, and it's not something even remotely close to what i consider "most wonderful to see". But hey we can agree to disagree.

I know "chasing, killing, and then eating deer" is a rite of passage in the South, so is eating cats in China, eating bats in India, etc.

Who gives a flip? Sometimes customs, rites, and passages need to be looked at, re-defined, and maybe even changed or dropped altogether.

For instance, our crazy consumption. Today everyone is talking about global warming and green this and green that. Well ask yourself why? Why is everyone currently so concerned with the environment? Because we realize that we need to change, that we cannot go on like we have. That just because we have been doing something for the last 50 years, doesn't mean we need to continue doing it.

Sometimes common sense has to prevail over un-founded and cruel customs from yesteryear.

Anywho, i do appreciate you coming by, and leaving your thoughts, as this adds to my overall knowledge on how others live their lives and why.

Feel free to visit again, and see you around the interwebs.

I too, like you, am in the south. I, however, have been here all my life. To tell you the truth, the most wonderful thing in the world is to see your spouse, children (male and female), friends and co-workers come home with their catch of the day. And yes - proudly display it before cleaning, cutting and packing it away. Heck - we even take them to the taxidermist and have them mounted so we can enjoy them for the rest of our lives. Some people even leave the mounts to their favorite family members in their last will and testiments. You see, it is not only a sport that is enjoyed by many - whether they be from the south or the north, it is also the only food on the table that some of these southerners and northerners have to go right along with the vegetables that they grew in their gardens all spring, summer and fall. So - reguardless of what it is that is being sought, whether it be deer, pig, cow, fish or chicken, God put them here for a reason, and I can't think of a better reason than to eat them.

Sadly, this is the case where I live too. I hate opening up the paper to see the "Outdoor" section full of pictures of dead animals accompanied by the grinning faces of the hunters.

I don't think I could stand to have these in my house though, funny concept or no.

Heather's last blog post..For the moms

Those are seriously cool. I am not a vegetarian by any means, but I just not get into following a truck down the road with a dead dear's body staring blankly back at me. Nor the guys who think it is sport to sit on the side of the road drinking beer while their dogs chase the dear so they can shoot them as they run by. Dumb.
